Annual Meeting: Ministry of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare of Sri Lanka

October 2009
Japan International Training Cooperation Organization (JITCO)

On September 14, 2009, JITCO officials had an annual consultation meeting with Mr. Sunil S. Sirisena, Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare (MFEPW) of Sri Lanka.

Secretary Sirisena mentioned that the number of trainees under the JITCO scheme had been very low compared to those sent to other countries.  He added that, the Ministry having worked on strengthening sending systems to resolve issues such as runaway incidents of trainees, these measures would hopefully increase the number of trainees to Japan.

JITCO provided an overview of the revised Immigration Act, and suggested that efforts to increase the number of trainees to Japan be implemented cautiously, with optimal timing according to economic situations in Japan.

JITCO officials also visited Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare, Dr. Keheliya Rambukwella.  The minister expressed the hope that the number of trainees to Japan would be increased.

On the same day, a seminar for sending organizations was held, attended by about 30 persons from sending organizations.  JITCO provided an overview of the revised training program.
